Pilates Class Details

Pilates was designed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century as a way to correct muscular imbalances and improve posture, coordination, and balance. Pilates focuses on the core, while training the entire body and lengthening the spine. According to a study by the Journal of Orthopedic & Sports Physical Therapy, Pilates is especially helpful for patients with chronic back pain. Researchers believe that by stabilizing the lower back region, Pilates alleviates stress on the back and increases mobility.

At Roper PT, we utilize classical Pilates mat-work and chair exercises, which contain elements of yoga, calisthenics, and ballet. Pilates lengthens and stretches all the major muscle groups in a slow, precise manner without aerobic exertion.

The health benefits of Pilates include:

  • improved flexibility, posture, and stabilization of your spine
  • increased concentration of body awareness, which in turn helps physical
  • coordination and balance
  • rehabilitation and prevention of injuries related to muscular imbalance
  • major strengthening of your powerhouse – deep abdominal, pelvic, back and glute muscles
  • safe rehabilitation of joint and spinal injuries
  • increased lung capacity and circulation through deep breathing
  • stress management and relaxation

She worked for several second-generation instructors in NYC and ran her own studio in Hoboken, NJ, Harmony Pilates.

“I was delighted when Roper Physical Therapy added Pilates to their services. Pilates has been a favorite of mine because it focuses on core strength and really does builds it. Plus it has helped me to be more aware of my body’s structural alignment. I practice yoga too and Pilates is a great compliment to that. One of the biggest pluses I’ve found with Pilates at Roper is the instructor.  Megan is not only kind and fun, she is very knowledgeable and knows her craft.”

“I am a 46-year-old, three-time cancer survivor, mother of 2 teenage girls, and part-time nurse.  Pilates makes me feel good!  I look forward to my appointments with Megan and truly enjoy this “me” time.  It is challenging but fun.   My entire body gets a workout.  My spinal column gets a nice stretch and I feel each vertebra say “Thank you” as I acknowledge them one by one.  Another eye-opening concept for me…there is space between my vertebra! I am grateful for the opportunity to learn and participate in Pilates with Megan at Roper PT.  It helps remind me that although life is full of challenges, I can learn to adapt and overcome.  I continue to work on my strength and flexibility and improve my overall health by becoming aware of my body’s movement and alignment.”
